今週火曜日、９月１日は「防災の日」でしたが、みなさんは防災について考えてみたことはありますか？
September 1 was the National Disaster Prevention Day in Japan. Have you ever deeply thought about “Disasters”?

私の住む宮城県仙台市が位置する東北地方では、みなさんもご存知の通り、４年前の２０１１年３月１１日、日本観測史上最大の東北地方太平洋沖地震が起こると同時に、その巨大地震により大津波が東北地方を中心とした東日本沿岸を襲いました。みなさんは「釜石の奇跡」というのを聞いたことがありますか？地震発生時、日頃から地震や津波について学び、備えていた岩手県釜石市の小中学生が、大人にも避難を促しながら自ら高い場所に避難し大勢が助かりました。今では「釜石の奇跡」と呼ばれ、防災教育の模範とされています。
I live in Sendai in Tohoku, and as you know four years ago the biggest earthquake recorded in Japan occurred on March 11. Followed this catastrophe, a huge tsunami rushed into a large part of the Japanese Eastern coast.
Have you ever heard of the “Miracle of Kamaishi”?
At the time the earthquake occurred, elementary and junior high school kids in Kamaishi were already prepared to such a disaster through regular practice and studying and along with adults ingeniously escaped the school, went into the heights and a lot of people were saved from casualties. We call it the “Miracle of Kamaishi” and it is now an exemplarity in the Education for Disaster Prevention.

地震は突然やってきます。地震警報システムが開発され、緊急地震速報を携帯電話で受信したり、テレビやラジオなどのメディアで報じられることがありますが、速報は揺れが感じられる数秒～十数秒前にしか届きません。今私たちにできることは、いつ起こるかわからない地震に備えて、いつどこで地震に遭遇しても慌てずに行動できるよう、場所ごとにどのように行動するべきかを考えておくことです。
Earthquakes occur without notice. Even if seismic warning system were set, earthquake early warnings are sent into everyone’s phones and TV, radio and other Medias are relaying the latest information, it takes about a few seconds to a few dozen seconds to reach us.
What we can do now is being prepared at anytime and anywhere in the case an earthquake occurs, in order not to panic. It is crucial to think about the correct behavior to take according to the place we are at the time of a disaster.
